Angling report for September 2001 for the Fortland Fishery, River Easkey, Co. Sligo.

The Easkey river was at summer drought level for most of the month following the driest September in North Connaught which would typically be the wettest month of the season. Rain did eventually arrive - on the second last day of the season! A small, foul flood arrived on the 29th followed by high, coloured, and rising water on the 30th - a day or two too late for our anglers. That said 64 Salmon were taken in 128 rod days for the month.
Best fish of the month was a fine summer salmon of 11lbs2oz, which fell to the fishery manager Granville Nesbitt on a Bann special form the Nursery Pool. Next best was a 10lbs2oz salmon, which was part of a 4 fish bag for Dustin Pitman from Wasles. Other notable catches include an 8lb8oz salmon taken on the fly for Simon Evans from Cornwall, a 6 fish total for his week, for Fortland regular Sean Maye from Sligo 2 fish for the day and also for Peter O'Reilly and 8 fish for 5 days for joe Cobley from Hereford.
Although September was dissapointing by our usual standards a very healthy stock of fish was evident with fresh fish running throughout the month despite the unseasonably low water levels.
